Law firm launches new team to tackle insolvency
Updated 3rd March 2009
The deepening recession has prompted one of Wales' leading law firms to create a dedicated business recovery and insolvency department for the first time.
Designed to help rescue struggling firms or protect the creditors of failing companies, the new operation at Harding Evans Solicitors has been set up in response to fast-growing demand in a turbulent economic climate.
The firm has recruited Helen Tudball, one of Wales' most prominent specialists in insolvency law, to lead this team.
Helen, who was previously head of business recovery and insolvency at Cardiff firm Berry Smith, has been consistently recognised in this field in the prestigious Legal 500 list and Chambers Guide to the legal profession.
She also has extensive experience in commercial disputes and litigation.
The new team's role will be to help companies, creditors and other stakeholders find solutions when businesses hit financial difficulties or begin to fail.
"Businesses face huge challenges in the current climate and a growing number are getting into difficulty."
This includes working closely with insolvency practitioners, in many cases.
Helen said: "Businesses face huge challenges in the current climate and a growing number are getting into difficulty.
"Lawyers have a pivotal role to play in advising and brokering solutions for both businesses and creditors.
"Professional support from an early stage can be critical in achieving the restructuring and survival of a business or protecting either the creditors or directors, if the enterprise needs to go into administration or liquidation."
The new department also includes solicitor Owen Williams, who has been appointed to focus on debt recovery work.
The operation will also draw upon the expertise of other corporate law specialists at the firm, including managing partner, Zep Bellavia, an expert in dispute resolution, head of employment law Daniel Wilde and head of company and commercial law, Mike Jenkins.
Helen is originally from Chepstow and completed her law degree in Bristol before qualifying with leading London commercial lawyers, Fladgate Fielder.
Since then she has worked with major law firms in Bristol and Cardiff.
Owen is originally from the Rhymney Valley, and graduated in law from Cardiff University before joining Harding Evans, where he qualified as a solicitor.
